SNIPEF visits SeaWarm to learn more about innovative renewable technology using sea water

May 5, 2025

The SNIPEF Technical Team, accompanied by members and affiliates, travelled to South Queensferry last week to visit SeaWarm and learn about its innovative water-source heat pump that uses sea water as a heating source.

SeaWarm draws water from the Firth of Forth, pumping it into a heat exchanger tank which harvests the heat before transferring it into buildings via a heat pump. The tank implements SeaWarm’s HotTwist Technology which is engineered to maximise heat extraction from the sea to ensure superior performance and durability.

Those on the tour also got the chance to see this technology in action, visiting the Port Edgar Naval Battery guard house where the system had been installed.

With Scotland’s abundance of coastline and natural water sources, water-source heat pump technology is particularly applicable country-wide – providing another heat source option for those exploring the renewables market.

SNIPEF affiliates and members were able to gain valuable insight into how the technology could be applied to domestic and commercial customers, while also learning about SeaWarm’s plans to further refine the technology for market.
