To become a member of SNIPEF, your business must:
Have a base of operations in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Have been trading for at least 12 months.
Employ qualified operatives: You must employ over 51% graded plumbing and heating operatives. For clarification on grading, visit SNIJIB.
Insurance requirements: Hold a minimum of £2 million in public liability insurance and adequate employers’ liability as appropriate.
Background checks: Allow SNIPEF to contact your local trading standards office and local plumbers’ association for basic background checks.
Pass a Technical Inspection: Once the above points are approved, you will receive a technical inspection. This inspection ensures that your work meets industry regulations and best practices, maintaining the integrity and reputation of SNIPEF members.

Who can apply for SNIPEF membership?
SNIPEF membership is for plumbing and heating businesses based in Scotland or Northern Ireland that have been trading for at least 12 months. Members must employ more than 51% graded operatives, certified by SNIJIB.
How do I apply to become a member?

How much does SNIPEF membership cost?
Membership fees for 2025 are as follows:
Application fee: £75 + VAT (paid when you apply)
Annual subscription: £499 + VAT (can be paid in full or in 12 monthly Direct Debit instalments)
Per Operative Fee: £97 + VAT for each graded plumbing or heating operative, up to a maximum of 70 operatives. Directors, business owners, partners, and apprentices are not charged this fee.
Our membership year runs from 1 January to 31 December. You can choose to pay your fee in full or spread the cost over 12 monthly instalments by Direct Debit, with no extra charges. If you join partway through the year, you’ll only pay for the remaining months. Membership fees are tax-deductible as a regular business expense and offer excellent value. In many cases, advice on just one issue can save your business several times the cost of the annual fee.
How long does the application process take?
Typically 2–3 weeks
To ensure the highest standards, the SNIPEF membership process usually takes two to three weeks, assuming we have received all the necessary application documents.
Once your membership is active, you can start enjoying SNIPEF benefits right away, including technical advice, online training, industry updates, networking opportunities, and promoting your business through our Need A Plumber website.
