Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023
March 27, 2023
To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023, SNIPEF employees attended various events at schools and colleges.
Monday 6 March
SNIPEF Regional Support Officer, Charlotte Rollo, and Business & Equality Officer, Lorraine Doig attended the Stranraer Academy careers fair in Dumfries & Galloway to speak to students and parents about apprenticeships in plumbing. There was a lot of interest from students and parents/carers considering a career in a trade profession, which was great to see.
Tuesday 7 March
SNIPEF Regional Training Officer, Andrew Thomson attended an evening apprenticeship event at Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline. The event was organised by Fife College in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce Fife and Skills Development Scotland.
Michelle, another SNIPEF Regional Training Officer, along with Charlotte, SNIPEF Regional Support Officer, attended New College Lanarkshire in East Dunbartonshire for their evening apprenticeship event for parents/carers of school leavers.
Thursday 9 March
Charlotte attended a STEM apprenticeship event organised in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce West, at West College Scotland (Greenock Campus). The event was well attended with over 150 attendees.
Andrew attended an apprenticeship event at Auchmuty High School in Glenrothes. The evening event was organised by Developing the Young Workforce Fife and saw a range of representatives from local businesses speak to students, teachers and parents/carers on apprenticeship opportunities within their industries. The event was well attended, and it was great to see a lot of parents/carers interested to know more information on plumbing.
Regional Training Officer, Neil attended an apprentice and employer information event at Moray College. Neil invited Alan Henderson (Mechanical Contract Manager) and Marion Stewart (SNIPEF Apprentice Plumber) from SNIPEF Member G&A Barnie Group to attend the event with him so attendees could get an apprentice and employer perspective.
Friday 10 March
Organised by Developing the Young Workforce, Andrew and Lorraine visited both Perth Academy and Bertha Park High School to present a MA in Plumbing & Heating workshop to S3 and S4 students. The workshops were presented to physics, engineering and woodwork classes. As part of the sessions, students participated in a pipework challenge to better understand the work of a plumber. The visit was hugely successful with a lot of engagement from students who were interested in going down the apprenticeship route to employment.
