SNIPEF calls for mental health mentor for industry

May 13, 2021

Nature is the theme this Mental Health Awareness Week 2021

Mental Health Awareness has never been more important. With rising suicide rates due to lockdowns and the Covid-19 pandemic, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that male suicides are now at their highest in two decades, with suicides peaking in the 45 to 55 age category.

Historically, the Plumbing and Heating industry is male dominated, made up of many self-employed companies. The lack of job security felt during the pandemic will also have caused significant strain on the industry's mental health.

SNIPEF made clear in our manifesto, which you can read in full here, that mental health in our industry was already a major issue before the pandemic, and there are concerns that these issues will now have been exacerbated. We want there to be a culture of prevention and early intervention to reduce poor mental health and suicide rates, and as such we are calling on the Scottish Government to fund the introduction of a mental health mentor for the construction industry.

The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 is nature. As Mark Rowland, CEO of the Mental Health Foundation explains "For most of human history, we lived as part of nature. It is only in the last five generations that so many of us have lived and worked in a context that is largely separated from nature.....Nature is our great untapped resource for a mentally healthy future."
